Norval Morrisseau Prints

LA GALERIE CARTIER AND POLLOCK GALLERY JOINT EXHIBITION (1966)

Date: 1966
Exhibition Poster
Printer: Araneus

Printed in 1966 to promote a joint exhibition between the Pollock Gallery and Galerie Cartier.

This item is important historically as it dispels a Morrisseau myth often repeated. It is often said that Norval Morrisseau was dubbed the Picasso of the North by the french press during the 1969 Galerie Saint Paul exhibition in France.  As often happens with Morrisseau, many have often repeated information which has had no basis in fact.

This poster indicates that Norval Morrisseau was dubbed the "Picasso of the North" by Jack Pollock and Galerie Cartier owner Dr. Herbert Schwarz for promotional purposes. The idea of the moniker likely originated with Dr. Schwarz  who was a well known collector and admirer of artist Pablo Picasso.
